Eames chairs, named by Time Magazine as the best design of the 20th century, have been the standard of chair design since their initial appearance in 1946. The seat, designed by designers Ray and Charles Eames for Herman Miller, is made of incredibly shaped plywood, comfortable and light. It has become the standard by which other models of chairs are measured.
The creation actually began when Charles and his wife Ray worked on the scenery for MGM in the 1940s and experimented with different styles of wood sculpting. Didn’t they know how their concepts would affect design for future generations? Based on their concepts, the U.S. Navy eventually developed stretchers, tires and gliders made of plywood and molded using pressure and heat. These newly developed facilities were used with great success during the Second World War.
After the war, the duo used the concept they had invented to create chairs that could be sold to the masses. Made of hard surfaces instead of padding, it was very different from today’s standards. After much trial and error, they finally discovered that their design was better suited to individual seats and backs, rather than the whole part with which they began. Thanks to this new design, they found that the chair is actually even more comfortable than its previous incarnation. Their new style echoed the shape of the human body, giving it an incredibly comfortable fit.
The Eames Lounge chair is one of the most copied styles in the entire collection. This comfortable high-backed and shaped chair is a classic modern design. Although it has existed since the 1940s, today it remains one of the most copied chairs. It is often called the Herman Miller Eames chair and is usually combined with a suitable ottoman. The design is known all over the world. It’s even at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, as well as at the Art Institute of Chicago. The craftsmanship of this chair is unparalleled in terms of design and comfort.
The original chair was made of Brazilian rosewood, which is now an unstable tree that is considered endangered. More than twenty years ago, the veneer became a more environmentally friendly option. Modern chairs are made on 24% of recycled materials. This incredibly beautiful chair is more of a work of art than just office furniture. From the outlined seat to the smooth long legs, it certainly deserves its place in the Museum of Modern Art. Unsurprisingly, it is used in prestigious offices and homes around the world. Owning a Ferrari or a Lamborghini is almost like having a status symbol.
